In a brilliant use of social media, 350action.org created this video, petition, and social sharing tools to suggest that hurricanes be named after Climate Change Deniers instead of unfortunate ordinary people who do nothing to cause hurricanes.
The site declares: “we propose a new naming system. A system that names extreme storms caused by climate change, after the policy makers who deny climate change and obstruct climate policy.”
The video, which has already had nearly 1.5 million views since it was published three days ago, is hilarious. And humor is a great way to bring home any serious point.
Among the clever interactive features of the site:
- a list of Congresspeople and Senators who deny climate change, with a quote by each one and a link letting you Tweet directly to each one to tell them to stop denying climate change
- a page where you can log in to facebook to see which if your friends shares a name with a hurricane
- and there are three short paragraphs explaining the facts about climate change. No charts, graphs, studies, histrionics, emotional appeals, long-winded videos or boring PPTs. Just the facts in clear language.
