Here come Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants spinach and Dora the Explorer oranges. There are also Tweety Bird grapes and Tasmanian Devil apples.
I’m not usually a fan of dogvertising and other silly forms of advertising, but cartoon characters on fruit and vegetables are a great idea for encouraging kids (and parents) to develop a taste for healthy food.
I recently saw a book that taught kids how to count. The book consisted of photos of oreo cookies, and the kids learned by counting the oreos. As much as I cringe at buying cartoon branded spinach, I suppose it is better than no spinach at all. On the flip side, I watched plenty of Popeye growing up, but never had the desire to eat spinach as a child.
Chances are this marketing effort is targeted more at the parent than the child.
