After all the recent kerfluffle of Apple suing bloggers for leaking secrets, Apple has released exactly the product the bloggers reported. Apple today released the smaller-than-a-pack-of-gum $99 iPod Shuffle and a $500 MAC.
Dan Gillmor hit the nail on the head when he said that despite Apple’s claims to the contrary, it was trying to suppress free speech.
“I’m fairly sure of this: If the party leaking information to Think Secret had sent it, say, to the San Jose Mercury News or New York Times, and had those publications run the news, Apple wouldn’t be suing them. Both have deep enough pockets to defend themselves.”

This is ridiculous! It’s totally wrong for someone to leak any company’s secrets. Of course Apple released exactly the product that the bloggers reported. They had to because that was what they were intending to release. But the bloggers are total jerks. Looking at IBM’s blogger guidelines, they say: “Protecting confidential and proprietary information. You must make sure you do not disclose or use IBM confidential or proprietary information or that of any other person or company on any blog.” It’s common sense and I think those bloggers ought to reap what they sow!
