Human Rights News reports that, as recently as last year, the US operated a secret “dark prison” in Afghanistan, near Kabul. Detainees were subjected to torture and other mistreatment, including being forced to listen to Eminem’s “Slim Shady” and Dr. Dre while in total darkness for as long as 20 days.
BBC News maintains that Iraqi POWs are broken with long bouts of Sesame Street and Barney songs. The music is culturally offensive to the detainees, says the BBC report.
John Sifton, terrorism and counter-terrorism researcher at Human Rights Watch, said, “We’re not talking about torture in the abstract, but the real thing,” said Sifton. “U.S. personnel and officials may be criminally liable, and a special prosecutor is needed to investigate.”
