Peter Jennings, the suave ABC-TV broadcaster who delivered the news to Americans every night for 50 years, died Sunday of lung cancer. He was 67.
He announced his diagnosis on April 5, saying he would undergo chemotherapy and joking about losing his hair. He never returned to the air after that night, although he did occasionally go to the office.
Jennings was no talking head. He was a real reporter. I met him in ABC’s newsroom and was impressed to see him at his computer, involved in producing his evening broadcast. He did a story about my consumer complaint handling business once. I was honored to have him speak my name.

What a shame to lose such a broadcasting giant. Peter was a genuine nice guy. I met him outside the 2000 Democratic Convention in LA and he was chatty, humorous and sincere as he relaxed with a post-Convention cigarette.
May he rest in peace…
A great loss, a noble and honorable man, we will miss him.
When I anchored the news, I kept my writing style and wit intact, but I tried my damnedest to channel Peter’s demeanor and poise.
He’s the last of a generation, and they literally do not make them like that anymore.
