The LA power failure this afternoon brought down my web host and the thousands of sites they host, including my site, this blog and my email for many hours.
It sure doesn’t take much to cause chaos. Not particularly re-assuring, is it.

Your host didn’t have a backup generator for such an eventuality?
I’d be thinking about moving to someone who has backup systems in place!
Same thing happen to us and we never received any email or communications about it. Funny thing is we discovered it was a blackout that casued the servers to go down because our host Dreamhost was a top search term on Technorati.
I found this link on the Dreamhost blog: http://status.dreamhost.com/
On the site it says “this site is hosted off our primary network and will contain information about any serious downtime issues. This page is only updated if our primary system is unavailable.”
I’m going to cite your post, as it is perfectly apropos of my blog last night about real things vs. unreal things. No, it doesn’t take much to cause chaos. And no, it’s not particularly reassuring, especially if you live on a coast. Any coast, apparently.
I read you every day. You do very high quality work, and I’ve learned a great deal from you. Thank you.
Chris
yup, dreamhost is my host too. pretty disappointing performance.
