The top search term in Technorati is the word “habitaquo“, a made up word.
The Spanish Google News site launched a SEO contest yesterday. The winner will be the website appearing on the first position of Google search engine marketing pages (SERPs) on May 23rd with “habitaquo” word. The first prize is an Apple MacBook Core 2 Duo so 187 blogs have inserted this new word already. So far, no pages come up in Google SERPs for “habitaquo.”
It’s interesting how easily manipulated the top searches are in Technorati. It wouldn’t seem, with some 5 million blogs being scanned by Technorati, that 187 posts would tip the scales so much. Also interesting: most of the blogs using the “habitaquo” tag are listed as having no other blogs linking to them, generally an indicator of low influence.

Can an English blog compete for the prize or is it limited to Spanish contents?
There doesn’t seem to be anything that says your entry has to be in spanish.
In your criticism of “how easily manipulated the top searches are in Technorati,” I think you’re confusing two issues.
If 187 blog posts contain this made-up word, it’s certainly not a word or topic or idea that’s truly substantial in bloggers’ minds — especially if most of those few blogs don’t have much “authority” (as defined by T’rati).
But in no way does that prevent it from being the (legitmate) “most popular search term.” If the contest goal were to have a first-page result for that says, for example, “Al Gore is a habitaquo” when searching for “Al Gore” in general, then *that* would show that the *search results* are easily manipulated.
The “most popular search terms” list is, was and always will be just a list of buzz words and bimbos’ names. That “habitaquo” is today’s number one just means a lot of people are looking for info about it and the related laptop giveaway. It’s a hot topic — not manipulation.

Well, I don’t think that only 187 posts could manipulate Technorati for long time. I think that the reason why habitaquo appears in the top searches is the novelty of the contest (we are in the early days of two months, the duration of the contest) and the zeal of the contestants looking for other competitors. In a few days, habitaquo will disappear from the searches in Technorati.
It was great view habitaquo as the technorati most searched tag and at the same time none in a google search.
I wonder what makes “Habitaquo” (the commenter) think BL Ochman is a “Mr.”?

Thing is, we all want to see how many competitors there’ll be. If we’re just a few, well, relaxes, but seeing technorati’s results, this has been quite a hype. I think more than one company is going to have little efectivity these days from his SEO supervisor.

I agree about the hype created around this word ‘habitaquo’ and believe me, in three weeks this is going to be either a phenomenon or a complete fiasco.
My native tongue is spanish and I was like WTF! what is the meaning of this word!? let’s hope this turns out to be an entertaining event.

Congratulations I found this on the very first page of a Google search for habitaquo. This is turning into quite a phenomenon and for those, such as myself, without any expertise in the field of SEO we just want to know how it’s done.

There’s no specification on the language of the web, but in fact there is a specification on the language of the search:
http://www.google.es/search?q=habitaquo&hl=es
This search gives totally different results from the “international” search. So you oughta focus on that if you want a MacBook!
There are a lot of spam about this contest over internet, some people has oversaturated technorati and now they are supervising updated with that keyword.

ningun momento una prueba de nivel oral ni nada parecido, al final, que te meten en una clase con un profesor
