Here we go again. There is a heavy smell of gas throughout the west side of Manhattan and across the River to New Jersey. Mayor Bloomberg was just on TV, talking for 10 minutes and saying nothing. My friend who works for AP says the smell was particularly strong in her part of the building but that they were not evacuating because there would be nowhere to go since the smell is outside.
The Mayor says there is no danger of explosion, but he lies. Con Ed said coporate gobbledegook too. Some subway stations and the PATH were temporarily shut down, but the Mayor says they are open now.
I hear the sirens and that brings up 9/11 PTSD. I am trying to stay calm, and praying that everything will be ok.
UPDATE: noon, Although the smell is still there, everyone I know is OK.
I suspect there is nothing to worry about (easy for me to say), but if I were in NYC, i would keep outside air out and keep my head down.
The problem: inside buildings the smell is so strong that people’s eyes are stinging. One of the nurses at FIT on 27th Street and 8th avenue was so sickened by it that she threw up. A lot of the students were sent home from there. regardless of what you may hear, people have been sickened.
Which begs to ask the question:
Has the gas passed Mayor Bloombberg?
