Feili, a 13-year old chimp at Zhengzhou Zoo in central China’s Henan Province, has taken up smoking and spitting because she is sexually frustrated, according to zoo officials.

She imitates the behavior of visitors, who regularly throw her lit cigarettes because they are morons.
Her 41 year-old “husband” is no longer able to satisfy her, according to English.eastday.com. The zoo has tried to find another partner, but all have been rejected
Perhaps she’s displaying odd behaviors because she is bored. Most large (and small) mammal displays are grossly substandard and seldom provide behavioral enrichment. If you pay close attention to any caged mammal, you’ll witness stereotypic behaviors, such as pacing, self-mutilation, regurgitation, bar licking, neck craning, etc… But that’s the less humorous approach. :-) Zoos never tell you that. Bad PR.
the whole idea of zoos is pretty dreadful.
All those explanantions are possible. How do we humans handle it when the weather is bad outside and we are stuck inside for a very long time? Imagine never leavig the house?????
