Seth Godin fries clueless PR people in a post about an incredible press release from hell. I could’t have said it better!
But tell me, please, which blogger out of the 10,000,000 is going to run a story with this headline (I’m not making this up):
REFLECTING REACH AND BREADTH OF ITS MEDIA NETWORKS,
THE VENDARE GROUP CHANGES NAME TO VENDARE MEDIA
WOW! Now there’s something that’s interesting and relevant to the people who have a choice about what to read. If your press release is a square peg and all the blogs out there are round holes, that doesn’t mean you should flog it anyway.
I am constantly astounded by the low level at which so much of PR operates. Why the hell is that?
And please, spare me the sanctimonious excuse that they are just trying to make a living.
The person who was asked to write that release should have told their client, or their boss that nobody would read anything so ridiculous and helped to find an angle with a prayer of being useful.
Traditional press releases are dead and this one isn’t a worthy fish wrapper.
