Firefox_Logo.jpgI lack the computer geek gene. So it’s no surprise that award-winning Firefox Mozilla, the latest beta of an open source browser developed with input by more than 1,000 programmers, entered my purview last week, just after it hit 2 million downloads in less than two weeks.
The marketing of the browser, by its self-appointed evangelists, is one of the most interesting things about Firefox. There is a site called Spread Firefox.com which includes forums and blogs where users provide marketing ideas for Firefox.
Among the marketing tools is Defending the Fox, a wiki where users can post sites that don’t “Support” Firefox. They also give information, on how to contact the webmaster, to get them to try and support Firefox.
Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is so fraught with security problems that switching to Firefox is actually recommended by no less than the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT), http://www.us-cert.gov/ a division of the Department of Homeland Security. Talk about a product endorsement!
