Kansas City Star reports that Natural Balance has recalled canned and dry dog and cat food because of contamination in an ingredient other than wheat gluten that caused the Menu Brands recall of 100 brands. The recall was prompted by reports of kidney failure in cats and dogs who ate Natural Balance foods.
Natural Balance is not made by Menu, indicating that Menu is certainly not the only manufacturer whose products are contaminated.
Natural Balance recalled all its Venison and Brown Rice canned and dry dog foods, its Venison and Brown Rice dog treats and its Venison and Green Pea dry cat food.

“Not all pet foods contain poor quality ingredients, but you have to read and understand the labels in order to make an informed decision. Unfortunately, pet food companies use obscure terms to describe the ingredients that go into their products.”

News-Sentinel: Questions still linger about pet food recall
My previous posts on the pet food recall here
When will this end? Not any time soon. Until I can learn a lot more about what is safe to buy and feed my pets, I’m cooking for them. Yes, it’s a pain in the butt. Yes, there is a lot to learn. And yes, I’m willing to spend an afternoon once or twice a month preparing food I can freeze that will keep my pets safe. Are you?
Thank you to Neil Rosenblum, owner of Pet Stop, who alerted his customers this morning to the new recall and the 5Star Dog website. He and the owners of Whiskers Holistic Pet Productss are great resources for thorough information about pet issues.
Thank you so much for this piece of information. This situation is getting more and more scary. Benny is a lucky doggie to have you taking such good care of him. I might just do the same…
I agree about cooking your pets’ food. I still feed commercial dry food (back to basics and purina pro plan) but have stopped feeding my dogs any sort of commercial canned food. Luckily my cats never liked commercial canned food (go figure) so that wasn’t a problem. One recommendation if folks decide to go this route is to make sure to give your pets a good quality vitamin supplement.
Hope Benny Bix feeling better after his troubles of earlier this week.
Susan – Purina was one of the companies that had some recalls. I’d be concerned about anything of theirs that had wheat or, now, rice gluten.
We need to read ingredients closely.
i still give benny 1 1/2 cups a day of solid gold wolf king, which has no gluten. the company claims that all its ingredients are sourced in the US, but only time will tell if that is ok.
