Besides the millions of humans who need our prayers and contributions in New Orleans and other Katrina-devastated areas, thousands upon thousands of domestic and farm animals desperately need rescue. Please wait until I find out exactly where to donate to do the most good.
UPDATE, Sept 2: Veterinarian Dr. Raph Gilbert says: “… the short answer is yes, the ASPCA is a very good choice for directing donations, but it would be best to specifically ear-mark the money to the ASPCA Disaster Relief Fund so it doesn’t get side tracked into other programs or administrative coffers (which are funded through other donor sources).”
My veterinarian friend, Dr Raph Gilbert, is checking to see which local animal organizations are still standing. They’re the ones who really need our help. The ASPCA or Humane Society are taking contributions, but they will have administrative fees and I’d like to cut out the middleman and give directly to those who will perform the services. In the meantime, The Salvation Army and The Red Cross will accept donations of animal food, blankets, toys, medications, etc.
I will have an update later today on animal organizations to which we can contribute directly. Please also give generously to The American Red Cross.

You have to be kidding talking about animals at this stage!! Too early mate.
Kidding! Obviously animals are not part of your family. Many people would not evacuate the hurricane path because they would not leave their animals. You can be sure I wouldn’t have left without mine. I refused to leave my apartment three blocks from the World Trade Center without my dog. If you have a heart, you try to help all creatures.
Just got pinged with information about the Best Friends Animal Society and what they’re doing in this situation.

Where’s Snowball the puppy? Puppy taken from distraught child boarding bus in N.O. Maybe if we use all of our resourses we can reunite the two and provide some happiness to this poor traumatized kid. Anyone out there with info or interest in trying to pull this off? Thanks!

i’d have been one of the people refusing to leave without my animals. they are family.
You might also want to list the folks at Pet Finders. They are actually taking requests and trying to find pets that were left behind.
News also reports that the folks at LSU’s Vet Medicine group are working with various organizations and have taken in a ton of pets and farm animals for people.
Hate to admit it, but if I couldn’t take Andy and Teddy– I would be staying.

No way I could have left without my pets. When left on their own they are like small children and really cannot fend for themselves. The way we treat our animals is a reflection on our society as a whole.
There was a picture of the policeman holding the dog(Snowball). Can anyone find out who he is and what he did with the dog. I hope he was smart enough to do something ‘nice’ with the dog.
