Try to imagine losing everything, being made homeless, shuffled around from state to state with just the clothes on your back. A friend of a friend was at the Superdome and couldn’t reach her husband until she was finally deposited in Texas a week later. Why? No way to leave, receive or send a message. At last, help is on the way. Not from any government entity, that’s for sure.
Working with the Cisco Systems Foundation, SBC Communications and Microsoft, Community Voice Mail will utilize existing CVM program personnel and volunteers to provide free voicemail numbers to evacuees and refugees of Hurricane Katrina, allowing them to connect to family, services and support for at least 6 months after displacement.

Dear B.L.,
Community Voice Mail is also asking celebrities, particularly those known and loved by the African American community, to please volunteer to record a 10-second “message of hope” that will play in rotation upon an evacuee or their loved one logging into the 800# voice mail system.
If anyone can help get the word out to celebrities or can round up some celebrity volunteers, please contact me!
