About.com, recently acquired by the New York Times, is on the move. Crain’s New York reports that About.com has signed a two-year deal with Kayak.com, a Norwalk, CT.-based comparison-shopping site for travel deals. Kayak, launched in February, was created by the co-founders of travel sites Orbitz, Expedia and Travelocity and counts America Online among its investors.
Jeff Jarvis of buzzmachine has quit his job at Advance.net to (among other things)work on About.com content development, on a consulting basis.
And MarketingVox reported that About.com CEO Peter Horton soon will be replaced with a younger executive, Scott Meyer, 35.
Having paid $410 million, about 30 times earnings, for About.com to leap into blogging, the Times surely needs to show a return on its investment quickly.

I wonder if About.com is profitable yet? It seems they are doing well in google search result, so it seems that they got a good business model.
Also, they are backed up NY Times, so should be fairly strong in the competition in the content space, vs. say, wikihow, etc.
By the way, it seems to me About.com’s articles is definitely of higher quality compared to wiki based sites or ehow etc. I like them more than other content sites as they are more creditable with better featuring of the writers alongside their articles.
