Reality check: Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIPRelevant Products/Services from 3COM, might be one of the fastest-growing sectors in the tech industry these days, but that doesn’t mean Americans know what the name means.
In a recent poll by Harris, for example, one in five think VoIP is a European hybrid car. Another 10 percent of the 1,006 people questioned by Harris said they thought VoIP was a low-carb vodka.
It’ll be a couple of years, the pollsters predict, before VOIP is mainsteam. And I predict that it won’t be free by then. So have fun kiddies, while Skype is still free.

It’s interesting how VoIP is marketed.
The problem with taking on new technology in this case is that people are used to how telephones work. They like how the current telephone systems work. You pick up the phone and make the call. No muss, no fuss.
Do people really want to learn ANOTHER piece of technology to save a few bucks?
I guess we’ll see when the VoIP companies earnings come out.
