Seth Godin sums up the reason a lot of us are willing to pay more or wait longer to deal with a small company that provides personal service, when he says that “small is the new big.” It’s so much nicer to do business with people who know your name and will tell you theirs.
BoingBoing (four people) has a readership growing a hundred times faster than the New Yorker (hundreds of people), Godin says.
Small is the new big, he notes, “because small gives you the flexibility to change the business model when your competition changes theirs.
Small means you can tell the truth on your blog.
Small means that you can answer email from your customers.
Don’t wait. Get small. Think big.”
Bravo Seth!!

Well I went from your post to read Godin’s post (I know EVERYONE calls him Seth or SethGodin which in and of itself speaks volumes) and some of the many trackback comments which led me to some new and interesting blogs and totally distracted me from the “small is the new big” point which I think is just kind of small…..the small restaurant with the “owner” that greets you by name is probably part of a national chain. Small is a concept…big companies can provide personal service if they get the concept and small companies fail everyday because they don’t change their business models.
