spacetrip.pngUP Aerospace gave new meaning to “beam me up Scotty” on Saturday. That’s when they sent the cremated ashes of James Doohan (Scotty from Star Trek) and Mercury 7 astronaut L. Gordon Cooper, as well as the ashes of 198 other paying customers, into space on their inaugural “Commemorative Space Flight.”
“Go, baby, go!” said Eric Knight, president of UP, the Connecticut-based company that, — for a mere $495 — will send anyone’s ashes into orbit. This also was the inaugural flight from the company’s Spaceport America in New Mexico, “the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport.”
That means they’ll send just about anything into space that you are willing to pay them to launch. As their low-tech homepage points out, “The sky is no longer the limit.” Got an idea for a product launch?
