To woo Indian comic lovers Marvel Enterprises has announced a “transcreation” in which Peter Parker of Queens, the hero under the classic Spiderman mask, is being replaced by a young Indian boy, Pavitr Prabhakar, a Mumbaiakar. Instead of fighting the Green Goblin he’ll battle Rakshasa, a mythical Indian demon.
In our increasingly global society, a literal translation of the American comic would not fly. So, to its credit, Marvel reinvented Spiderman to make him an Indian boy dealing with local problems and challenges, interwoven with local customs and culture. “Imagine Spiderman donning a dhoti, wearing jooti and leaping around rickshaws and scooters. …that is exactly what the new desi avtaar of Spiderman is going to do,” reports India Express.
