susanButcher.jpgOk, I admit it. I usually throw away the Sports Section of the NY Times, unread. But I read every word of the story about four-time Iditarod Sled Dog race winner Susan Butcher. The only woman ever to win the 1160 mile race, Butcher is being treated for acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) in a Seattle hospital. She needs a bone marrow donor to survive, and says she has to get through this, for her children. A successful bone marrow transplant would restore Butcher’s health.
Her husband, David Monson, has started a website, susanbutcher.com, with information about bone marrow transplants.
Monson told the Times, “In every relationship, one is the flower and one is the gardener … I’m the kind of person who tends to think ahead, so I’m never really in the present. But she laughs big time in the moment and she cries in the moment. Everything is right there in front of her, and I think that makes her special.”
Read the inspiring article, visit the susanbutcher.com site, and if there is something you can do to help, including sending a donation to help the family, please do.
Godspeed Susan Butcher.
