Here’s the response from a totally clueless publicist when I said I don’t open attachments because of virus threats and asked her to please put her press release in the body of an email or provide a link to it on the Web:
This is most helpful BL—thank you for this suggestion. I had not thought of this potential threat.
I will resend you the press release in an email and will definitely heed this advice for reporters I contact.
And I’m gonna be nice and leave out her name and her agency.
Clueless Publicists Still Using Email Attachments for Releases. Sigh.

One PR firm keeps pinging me with items about topics that the weblogs I write on/for don’t even cover, and she sent one email four times, each time not realizing that the 17 megabytes of attachments were probably not going to work for everyone. Needless to say, the rep was surprised (and confused) when I replied asking her what the deal was. Very silly.
I’ve been talking myself blue in the face about this topic since 1997. HTML email bad. Attachments badder.
Unfortunately Outlook comes preset to send HTML email and most users have no idea what that is, means or how to change it.
