Christo’s Gates were unfurled in Central Park this morning to blow, like lovely cosmic laundry, in the wind until the end of the month.
A joyous crowd turned out to celebrate the installation. The 7,600 Gates over 23 miles are being unfurled one by one by people with long sticks — about as low tech as you can get. And adding to the charm.
Christo raised all the funding privately. Not a dime of public money has been used, and the installation is expected to bring $80 million in hotel, restaurant and other spending by tourists, according to media reports.
