I just had the pleasure of participating in a two-hour MarketingProfs seminar on blogging with Robert Scoble, Doc Searles, Shel Israel, Steve Rubel, Debbie Weil, Toby Bloomberg, and Seth Godin
An interesting part of the discussion was predictions about where blogs will be 5 years from now. We agreed they continue to grow in number, stature and credibility. And that corporate speak will die at last because consumers will have access to a two-way conversation with companies.

they never got around to asking me my opinion re the five year thing

I think that blogs will be gone in five years.
Replaced by ubiquitous RSS of all things from all people, all the time.
Either you’re on the reader or you’re not.
the idea of visiting a blog will be sort of quaint.
I see what you’re saying, but people will always be interested in reading what others who are knowledgeable have to say.
and blog software gives anyone with something to say a chance to publish online:
Better blog software, like Moveable Type, has RSS capabilities, and produces search-engine friendly by creating a separate url for every post
