much more likely is that a big company or our govt will buy up the technology and then shelve it so it is never developed.

In fact, I bet that's why you're not hearing more about it. Look at wind, water and solar energy. We could be using all of them widely if some dollars were invested to bring them to the next phases of development. In fact, if there were some tax incentives for using them, they'd all be more widespread.
