July 4th - a Good Day to Re-Read the Declaration of Independence

declaration.pngToday being the anniversary of America's Declaration of Independence, it seems like a good time to read the document upon which this country was founded.

Astounding how remarkably eloquent and elegant it is. And that it could have been written yesterday. Every American should re-read it. Including the one who pardoned Scooter Libby.

" We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."

Grievances against the King:
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

Nice post, BL. I remember being very moved when I saw the original Declaration in D.C. We should never take these tenets for granted.

The thing that so amazes me is how applicable this still is today.

When this was written, the founding fathers still kept slaves, so it's rather astounding that they has such passion about human rights!
