Internet: Do You Think It Will Catch On?

Sorry I don't know the date of this clip. Sounds like early 1980s? My favorite quote: "The Internet is growing like an embryonic brain."

Hi BL,

The clip is a CBC News report from 1993, grabbed from the CBC archive site (archive.cbc.ca).

There's another great clip from the CBC archive site, from a 1970 interview where Graham Spry, a Canadian journalist speaks of a coming 'a new age of communication' with computers as the driving force. 'It will be the biggest business in North America'.

Further fun listening is a 1994 radio call-in show where host Peter Gzowski learns how to 'surf' the net.

1993. Just around the corner of our minds!

This was an wonderful report. I remember those Compuserve days and message boards. It really doesn't make the blogsphere that new.

You tube and video blogs, and now stream real-time video are pushing the envelope further.

This idea of being rooted as described in the piece is good, but he believes just the notion of communicating with others is enough to be rooted. I would explore that further by raising the issue of whether being a part of a group is what people crave?

And then if that is the case, then you automatically have conflict. A label is a group and it would be to take sides in some way. Don't get this all out of proportion, I'm not say all people who like guitars are at odds with all drummers, I'm raising the question, is being rooted about communicating or about being part of a group? And being part of a group will involve not being part of a different group that (in some cases) will have opposing positions, hence conflict.

If communication were the deeper need to become rooted, then we would have all these groups desiring to communicate with each other and not try to mandate that one group is better or more right than the other.

To be continued... (forever)
