Major Recall of 80 Brands of Dog & Cat Food After Deaths

puppies.pngMenu Foods, manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under 80 brands throughout North America is recalling millions of containers of its products while working to determine what caused kidney failure and deaths of many cats and dogs.

A list of recalled brands -- which include Eukanuba, Nutro, and Iams as well as food sold under PetSmart, Wal-Mart, Wegmans and other store brands -- is available at the Menu Foods website recall page

Menu is saying that the recall is limited to the "cuts and gravy" style foods. 1010WINS says that products all used wheat gluten from a new supplier.

Many commercial pet foods are manufactured by companies like Menu, Royal Cainin and others who sell numerous brands.

Whole Dog Journal reports on dog food manufacturers and rates the quality and ingredients of dog foods.

I supplement Benny Bix' Solid Gold dry food with raw meat, vegetables, vitamins and minerals because all commercial dog food is processed in a way that destroys nutrients.

My rescued greyhound was put to sleep on January 29th with kidney failure. I fed her Nutro canned food because I thought it was better than the cheaper brands. She had every symptom mentioned; diareah, vomiting, loss of appetite, drinking water a lot and listless. It all came about within a few months. Her loss is devistating to us and to know it could have been prevented is unbearable.

Our Persian cat, who was 17 years old, mysteriously stopped eating during late December and was listless. She had received an excellent physical rating in November. In January, we had to have her put to sleep because of severe kidney failure. Although she ate a variety of foods during her life, she had been given cuts and gravy foods during December.

I am so sad to hear about your pets' illnesses.

I am feeding benny, my labradoodle, mostly raw food and i think that's what we'll stick with until this is all sorted out.

my cat eats wellness canned food and i don't know what else i can feed him. it is not yet part of the recall, which seems to be growing.

cats do not do well with changing food.

My dog Shasta died feb 10th a beautiful, smart healthy black lab, sheperd, golden retreiver mix ( would have been 6 years old in may) died Feb 10th as the same way other pets have died.

The only difference is that she ate Alpo dry and the gravy mix. she woke up to having no appetite then she started vomiting (i just thought she had an upset stomach just like us) then by the evening she became very weak.

As i was getting her ready to go the Emergency Vets office she passed away. I feel for all the pet owners that has lost their pet to this horrible tragedy.

My Bull Terrier, Benny has been drinking a lot of water and peeing a lot (even at night), for the past several months. This is one of the symptoms listed on the recall. Benny's blood was checked in January for his surgery and his kidneys were fine, so the vet was clueless as to what was causing him to drink so much. I am so glad that I found out about this recall before he came down with kidney failure. My condolences for those who have recently lost there pets.
