Excellent tutorial by Amit Agarwal on using free Google Alerts to get instant email notification whenever something happens on topics that matter to you, including when your name is mentioned. Google lets you create up to 1000 alerts, and so does Yahoo! I find them more accurate than Technorati. But then, just about anything is.
As he points out, most news sites make you register to receive email alerts, and their alerts are not customizable. Say you want an alert whenever there's a new story about Google or Yahoo in Forbes. All you need to do is set up this alert:
