Oregon Paper Asks Readers to Re-Write an Editorial

The Editorial Blog of the Salem, Oregon Statesman Journal has invited readers to rewrite an editorial several readers complained about.

"We received a number of calls, letters and other comments from readers who found that wording offensive. So we're inviting you to rewrite that item. Make it a Winner, a Loser or Tossup and write one or two or three sentences. We'll include as many of your versions as we can in the Editorial Blog," said Editorial Page Editor Dick Hughes.

Now that's listening to your audience!

The first thing I was taught about in PR was to know your audience. That was the most important thing and it appears as though the Statesman Journal is doing just that. It is just good practice in all fields to do the same thing, to know their audience.

The audience is who controls the success of your company for the most part. You can have great ideas but if no one is buying it, or into it, then you have no way to measure success.

I believe the Statesman Journal is doing more than just listening to their audience, but incorporating their audience. It always feels nice when you know you have contributed to something good.

This way it gets their audience involved into their paper, which will give the citizens a sense of pride that they could help out.

Bravo to the Statesman Journal for getting involved with the community like this.
