Progress? Or Pity?

There was no warning. Rumor has it that the landlord tripled the rent on the 24-hour Manhattan deli that had been there forever. The space has been empty for two months now. A Hilton Hotel is opening up across the street, and the landlord will surely get his increase. Maybe he'll get a Starbucks. Or another damn Duane Reade. Both of those spread like cockroaches, crushing small businesses in their wake.
