Iditarod Heroine Susan Butcher Needs a Bone Marrow Transplant

susanButcher.jpgOk, I admit it. I usually throw away the Sports Section of the NY Times, unread. But I read every word of the story about four-time Iditarod Sled Dog race winner Susan Butcher. The only woman ever to win the 1160 mile race, Butcher is being treated for acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) in a Seattle hospital. She needs a bone marrow donor to survive, and says she has to get through this, for her children. A successful bone marrow transplant would restore Butcher's health.

Her husband, David Monson, has started a website, susanbutcher.com, with information about bone marrow transplants.

Monson told the Times, "In every relationship, one is the flower and one is the gardener ... I'm the kind of person who tends to think ahead, so I'm never really in the present. But she laughs big time in the moment and she cries in the moment. Everything is right there in front of her, and I think that makes her special."

Read the inspiring article, visit the susanbutcher.com site, and if there is something you can do to help, including sending a donation to help the family, please do.

Godspeed Susan Butcher.

Hey Susan,

--Great to see you again, on The National Georgraphic channel 11-12:00 noon today with your 3rd place finish race, back to the camp, Swenson to the finish first and Buser, 2nd IN SEARCH OF...Rick who got lost that time.

--And so if Martin can make it to New Hampshire for a talk (#x yrs. ago), re: the Laconia race, someone from here can make it there, and maybe with the right bone marrow. I see that the 1st 500 are tested for free, then $65/person, or private test at over $100. The local Red Cross has their annual blood drive next Tuesday (Jan.10th'06) at the Verizon Arena in Manchester, and so will be going to get my third souvenir hockey puck, and be sure to send a sample your way for testing.

-Happy New Year! -- Joe

P.S. Thanks for the signed Iditarod sled dog card of about 10 years ago now, and maybe a real photo of you autographed at the finish line after finishing this latest battle to victory! http://www.galenfrysinger.com/iditarod_alaska.htm
