Paris is Peeing Right Now

paris-mouthful.jpgHere's a story about Paris Hilton that I like a lot better than the one about her Carl's Jr. commercial. Last week, at Crash Mansion, at the story slam off of the urban story telling group, The Moth, one of the story tellers told of going out in a group including Paris Hilton. They were sitting in a trendy Manhatan Meat District boite, she said, when Paris hiked up her dress and said "I'm peeing right now." Can't get that story out of my head as I read the brouhaha about her Carl's Jr. commercial.

Now that Television Council research Director Melissa Caldwell has labeled the Carl's Jr. Paris Hilton commercial "soft porn" (duh) it's gotten yet another round of media play. Google lists 284 stories worldwide quoting Caldwell.

Yesterday, Steve Hall at adrants accused Carl's Jr. EVP of Marketing Brad Haley of creating a publicity stunt by telling the IT guys to shut down the servers for a while so he could claim that traffic crashed them.

I love Paris Hilton's "interview" on the Carl Jr's site, in which she says "This burger is really hot. It has like jalapenos and onion rings." She certainly is a sexy thing, until she opens her mouth.

The company's press release says "She fascinates Carl's Jr.'s most loyal customers,'young, hungry guys,' as well as 'young, hungry gals," Haley said. The woman sitting next to her at the club wasn't too fascinated.

I have a dog named Brewster, who's a real meet eater, just like Paris. He has a cute butt and doesn't mind being seen naked, just like Paris. But unlike Paris, he has the breeding and good sense to go pee out in the yard and there's never a danger of his dribbling on my foot.

The Thickburger concept flies in the face of nutritional Political Correctness, but CKE hasn't been able to hit that target of "young hungry guys" until now. Still, I think this campaign is about something else.

CKE operates both Carl's Jr. and Hardee's, which combined rank just behind Arby's in number of franchises in the U.S. (QSR ranks Hardee's number 15 and Carl's number 20.)

A lot of the negative buzz about this ad has included comments about "Who is Carl's Jr. anyway?" Well, the folks in NYC know now.

Let's see what happens to franchise growth over the next year or so. My guess is this spot was more about developing name recognition for expanding territory than anything else.

I am not sure why anyone really cares about Paris Hilton and expect she will fade back into obscurity in another year, maybe even in less time then that. Therefore, beyond getting some decent short-term pr exposure for doing soft-porn commercials, I expect there will be little or no effect on sales of burgers and expecially long-term branding for Carl Jr's.

That's so true about Carl's Jr. Who the heck are they?

When I saw the ad, I thought it was a car ad, but had no idea what kind of car she was having sex with. And I wondered why this skinny woman would be eating a great big hamburger in the middle of it all.

But then, I'm a vegetarian, a woman, and a New Yorker, who doesn't own a car. So I guess I'm not one of the hungry "gals" they're aiming at.

Carl's Jr is the West Coast sister-company of Hardees. They actually acquired Hardees but kept the name, instead of rebranding them as Carl's Jr.

As for Paris Hilton, money doesn't buy class.

I don't see what the fuss is about. Strikes me as the most natural thing in the world, to eat a large burger while washing the car.

I agree with James.. I see girls like that washing cars and eating burgers at the same time everywhere..

But I mean, she is a star, and shes in her twenties... so its a bit normal!
