Christo's Gates Will Be Unfurled Beginning at 8:45 a.m. Saturday

02_11_Gates_up.JPEGPreparations for tomorrow's opening of Christo's Central Park Gates installation are moving at a frantic pace.

Tomorrow morning, beginning at 8:45 a.m., scores of teams of volunteers will pull strings to unfurl -- one by one -- the 7600 bright orange gates that cover 23 miles throughout Central Park.

People either love or hate the idea. And this morning, a woman running through the park asked me, "Do you know why do they have all these orange things all over the park?" Apparently the news hadn't reached her planet.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the unfurling, which is expected to take about three hours, according to Gates volunteers.

Dana and I just reached the top of Great Hill and we were walking to the Block House when out of one of three expensive limosines entering from Central Park North out jumped Christo and Jeanne-Claude. We gave them a "Bravo" with others and a clap, then followed them along briefly as they looked in wonderment at their creation, Chisto pointing gleefully at the light as it danced off the saffron fabric panels fighting the sudden squalls of wind in the arena of drapery surrounding the footpath. Just being there, seeing the artists pleased with the outcome: the moment made me feel happy too.

It's a very joyful installation. Reminds me of the Love Ins and Be Ins in the park in the 60s/ :>)

I saw Jeanne-Claude on the 11th, picking up garbage in the park.
