Martha Stewart, in Consummate PR Move, Asks to Go to Jail Now
Martha Stewart is a consummate publicist and a great showman. In a nationally broadcast news conference and an open letter on her site, Martha Talks, Stewart has asked Judge Cedarbaum to let her begin her prison sentence now. Serving the five month sentence rather than waiting for the conclusion of her appeal which wonít take place until sometime in 2005, will allow her, she says, "to put this nightmare behind me personally and professionally."
Noting that she may win her appeal and not have to serve, she says she still wants to get it over with. "If events unfold as I have been led to believe,," she said, "I will have this ordeal behind me and be back to work before spring planting season."
From a PR point of view, it's a brilliant move. If she is adjudicated, she'll be a hero and a martyr. If the sentence is upheld. It'll still be over and Martha's life will go on. And you can bet your bottom dollar that crooks will still be running many corporations and many government offices.
