The New York Post mistakenly trumpeted its exclusive "Kerry Picks Gephardt" on the front page this morning and now eBay sellers are briskly capitalizing on the mistake.
UPDATE: Apparently the Post Editor, Col Allan, was previously of Sydney, Australia's Daily Telegraph. Blogger Trevor Cook says Allan "seems to be making his mark in NY for all the wrong reasons."
Post editors thought they were scooping the competition when they ran the headline "Kerry Picks Gephardt as VP candidate."
Associated Press reports that last October, after the New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox in the American League playoffs, the Post mistakenly ran an editorial bemoaning the home team's loss. Post Editor in Chief Col Allan blamed that foul-up on a simple production error.
The Post is not alone. In 1948 The Chicago Daily Tribune ran its famous "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN" headline. Incumbent Truman wound up winning another four-year term.
