Pringles Potato Chips has announced it will soon release cans of potato chips with different trivia saying printed in edible ink (yecch!) on each chip. (answers will be printed upside down.) The launch is backed with a multi-million dollar marketing campaign including TV and coupons.
Susan Ager, writing in Knight Ridder Newspapers, got it right when she wrote: "Ö words do not belong on food. (M&M, a logo, is OK.) Food is to eat, not read. Words do not belong on potato chips, even if they are pseudo-chips like Pringles."
What's next? Cliff Notes on crackers? Hopefully, printing on food is not an emerging trend. General Mills already sells Fruit Roll-Ups that can be pressed to the skin to leave a tattoo before you eat them.
