Andrew Cantino sent me a link to his “Absurdly Cool Freebie Finder”, which is, well, absurdly cool. Cantino developed this beta of Freebie Finder, which is searchable, has an RSS feed, and, since freebies are rated by the community, tries to filter out scams and referral pyramids. It’s updated every few hours. I ordered samples of pet foods for my dog and cat, and some goodies for me too. And then I wondered, who IS this guy? I Googled him, and after following a bunch of links, I absolutely guarantee you that he’s someone we’ll be hearing a lot about.
Cantino is a Ph.D. student in Computer Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He works “primarily in the field of Intelligent Systems, focusing on machine learning.” Noodling around his site led me to his blog, So Many Schemes, which covers “Musings on Technology and Entrepreneurship by a Procrastinating Graduate Student”

It’s interesting and the use of RSS is good. However, still not as helpful right now as the forums in MoneySavingExpert.com due to the sheer weight of content in there, size of the community, and frequency of fresh posts. There are separate channels for Freebies, Competitions, and much much more beyond belief. The beauty of the site is that it is steered by the site founder Martin Lewis, but most of the content now is UG. He does use RSS on the site, for his blog for example, but not yet I think in the forums. If they add this functionality it will – as far as I can see – make the Freebie Finder fairly redundant in the UK.
